Today we will learn how to draw a teddy bear. Teddy bears are loved and huggable toys, so the teddy bear drawing needs to be cute and friendly-looking too. We will show you step-by-step how to draw a teddy bear sitting down on the floor, from some very simple, basic shapes. In the end, we will color the teddy bear in some nice and happy contrasting colors for a cute toy teddy bear drawing.
And that is it – now you know how to draw a teddy bear!
Drawing time:
about 10 mins
You will need:
pencil,
pen,
color pencils,
eraser,
drawing paper or
sketch book
As usual, let's start our teddy bear drawing with some simple base shapes. Draw an oval for the head, almost a circle, just a tiny bit flattened.
Then draw a "bowling pin" body underneath - the same simple base as on our hamster drawing. Draw two curved lines down from the head. The line for the back is popping out a bit more than the flatter front. Close the body at the bottom with another slightly curved baseline.
Finally, draw the vertical face split curve - this will help us place the teddy bear's face features. The teddy bear will be looking slightly sideways, so the face line is a bit off-center and bulging out to the side.
Next, draw the teddy bear's muzzle. This is just a flat oval around the mouth - place it symmetrically around the face line at the lower half of the head.
Then add a simple bear nose at the top in the center. The nose is drawn as two half curves - one at the top and the second, flatter one at the bottom.
Let's add a face and ears to those circles and curves to make the drawing look like a teddy bear.
Draw two tiny ovals for eyes just above the nose, again centered around the split face line. Then draw the mouth as two flat "U" shapes - with the centerline from the nose, this will look a bit like an anchor.
Next, sketch the teddy bear's ears. Draw these as two half circles sitting on the top of the head, slightly to the side. Draw the inner ear part as a smaller double up of the outer ear.
It is time to give our teddy bear some arms and legs. Draw the arms as two bent sausages. The arm pointing up is purely an upwards-bent "U" shaped sausage. The other arm, folded in the lap, is the same sausage "U", but closed up at the top, narrowing into a pointed corner at the shoulder.
Next, draw the teddy bear's legs. Since the teddy is sitting with his legs towards us, all we can see are the two big soles of his feet. Draw those as simple ovals. You can tilt one foot slightly sideways, for some variety.
Our teddy bear sketch is almost done, here are some final details to add some interest and make the teddy bear drawing look better.
On the paw pointing up, draw a small "C" shape for the simple teddy bear palm. Then carve out another larger "C" for the "bib" on the teddy's chest.
Finally, partially double up on the feet ovals to separate the soles from the feet. Then draw simple paw prints on the teddy bear's soles - one larger circle for the heel and three small ovals for the fingers.
Now, this is pretty much how to draw a teddy bear. All that is left is to outline the simple sketch.
With the sketch complete, let's outline the teddy bear drawing, starting with the face.
Color in the eyes and nose, leaving small white patches for the "shine" on the nose and in the eyes. Then outline the muzzle and the mouth "anchor" straight from the sketch.
Draw the teddy bear's head next. Start with the ear that is closer to us, as it needs to be drawn in front of the head outline. Overlap the half circles slightly into the head circle, so the ear looks positioned slightly forward on the head.
Then draw out the head oval directly from the sketch. Finally, draw the second ear - that one is hiding behind the head, so the ear lines stop at the head-oval edge line.
We have done all the hard work while sketching the teddy bear. To draw the teddy bear's arms and feet, simply outline them from the sketch, including the "palm" and the paw footprints.
The last part to finish is to draw out the teddy bear's body following the sketch. Draw the body outline only where it is not hidden behind arms or feet.
The final details are drawing out the "U" shaped bib line and adding another curved line across the teddy's tummy to suggest the stitched seam.
And here is the polished result of our "how to draw a teddy bear" tutorial once we have erased the sketch lines - one easy to draw, but nice and cute teddy bear sitting down on the floor.
All that is left is to color in the teddy bear drawing. Now, teddy bears come in many colors, which apparently have special meanings.
Rather than coloring our teddy the classic brown color, here we have gone for a lovely light blue teddy bear with some contrasting yellow for the mouth, bib, paws, and soles. Brightened up with some pink for the inner ears and footprints, this cute teddy bear drawing is unmistakenly a toy, rather than a real bear.
