In today’s drawing tutorial, we will expand our Easy Christmas Drawings collection and learn how to draw a Santa hat step by step.

The first drawing is as simple as it gets:  a bulged-out rectangle with a bent triangle on top.

The second Santa hat drawing is not much harder – we will teach you how to fold the tip of Santa’s hat and add a fancier way to draw the fur lining on the hat.

An easy Santa hat drawing

Our first tutorial is an easy Santa hat drawing: The base fur coat edge is drawn from a slightly bulged-out rectangle. The hat itself is then a bent triangle. At the tip, there is a simple oval for the pom-pom.

Easy Santa Hat Drawing: base sketch step-by-step

Step 1: Sketch the rectangle for the hat edge

Drawing step: Sketch the rectangle for the hat edge
Drawing step: Sketch the rectangle for the hat edge

Our Santa hat drawing starts with a simple wide rectangle. Bend all the sides, so they are slightly bulging out. We will round off the corners later.

This will be the bottom fur edge on Santa’s hat.

Step 2: Sketch the Santa hat shape and an oval for the pom-pom

Drawing step: Sketch the Santa hat shape and an oval for the pom-pom

Now sit a tall triangle on top of the rectangle from the previous step. For a really simple hat, you can just draw the rectangle as straight lines.

But the Santa hat will look much more believable and natural if you bend both sides slightly into wide “S” curves like we did.

Finish the Santa hat sketch with an oval or a circle sitting at the tip of the hat – this will be the pom-pom – the fluffy ball at the tip.

Let's draw a Santa under your hat!

How to Draw Santa: Step by Step Drawing

Learn how to draw Santa: one easy Santa drawing in a long robe and one awesome Santa with a bag full of Christmas presents and many fancy details.

Easy Santa Hat Drawing: outline the drawing step-by-step

Step 1: Outline the fur headband and the pom-pom

Drawing step: Outline the fur headband and the pom-pom

Time to start outlining the Santa hat sketch. Trace the bottom rectangle from the sketch. Round off all the sharp corners. This will do for a simple Santa hat fur headband.

You can leave the pom-pom oval smooth. However, we will go a bit fancier with the outline: Let’s use the zig-zag line we learned for the scruffy dog fur. Just make sure the points all fold upwards.

Step 2: Draw the Santa hat and add details to the pom-pom

All that is left is to trace the outline of Santa’s hat. Draw the lines between the bottom of the pom-pom and the fur headband on both sides.

As a final improvement, let’s suggest some details and fur spikes on the pom-pom. These are just a few short lines, or upside-down “V” peak points.

How do you like it? We think for such an easy drawing, this is a pretty good-looking Santa hat!

The final step is to color in the Santa hat drawing.

The hat itself of course needs to be a nice bright fire-engine red. Notice we have left the white highlight out. We have also added some darker red shading to the side. Both give the hat some volume.

For the white pom-pom and the furry headband, we are using our white-snow shading trick from the snowman drawing.  We add volume and texture to the white parts with light blue shading.

Our second tutorial will teach you how to draw a Santa Claus hat with a folded tip. It is not much harder than the easy Santa hat drawing, but looks more realistic. You will also learn a fancier way to draw the fur lining on the hat.

How To Draw A Santa Hat: base sketch

Step 1: Sketch the hat headband

Drawing step: Sketch the hat headband
Drawing step: Sketch the hat headband

Here we go again, same as before starting with the hat headband sketch. We are getting fancier, suggesting some 3D volume for the headband.

Draw a wide narrow oval first – that is the bottom opening of the hat.  Then add the two short sides up – these are slightly bent.

Then close the headband at the top. Draw a curved line that follows the shape of the upper half of your oval.

Step 2: Sketch the hat sides

Drawing step: Sketch the hat sides

Next, we are starting to build up the folded hat shape.

Draw two curved lines for the sides of the hat heading up from the headband. The one on the left is longer, and the one on the right is shorter. Both sides are slightly offset inward from the edge of the headband.

The shorter side will be where the hat folds over itself.

Step 3: Sketch the folded top of the hat

Drawing step: Sketch the folded top of the hat
Drawing step: Sketch the folded top of the hat

Here comes the tricky fold part.

Start with the bottom curve – the one that starts in the middle of the hat and bends down along the side of the hat. Go about as low as the bottom edge of the headband.

Then add the right curve that goes from the tip of the hat up to about the same height as our longer side of the hat.

Finally, close the hat at the top with almost a flat line.

Step 4: Sketch the pom-pom ball

Drawing step: Sketch the pom-pom ball
Drawing step: Sketch the pom-pom ball

Now, you can play with these lines and the shape of the hat – make the hat taller or the tip longer – it is up to you, so have fun.

The last thing to add is the pom-pom – again, just a simple oval at this sketching stage.

How To Draw A Santa Hat: outline the drawing

Step 1: Draw the top edge of the Santa's hat

Drawing step: Draw the top edge of the Santa's hat
Drawing step: Draw the top edge of the Santa's hat

Let’s start outlining the hat with the trickiest line. The upper edge line of the hat drawing follows the sketch.

As you see in the picture, there are small but important enhancements. Round off the sharp corners. Also, add a small dip to the top of the hat.

Step 2: Outline the folded edges

Drawing step: Outline the folded edges
Drawing step: Outline the folded edges

Next, draw the middle fold line. If you have a keen eye, we are not following the regular “C” shape bend of the curve completely. Rather we have added a bit of a very flat “S” curve to it.

That is the hard work done. Drawing out the short edge line on the right. Simply just trace it.

Step 3: Draw the furry pom-pom ball

Drawing step: Draw the furry pom-pom ball
Drawing step: Draw the furry pom-pom ball

Draw the fur hair on the pom-pom with a zig-zag line, similar to before. To try something new and wilder looking, use the zig-zags and split lines from the witch’s broom drawing.

The main difference is the broken lines and gaps on the broom outline. A bit fancier than a continuous zig-zag line.

Step 4: Draw the furry headband

Drawing step: Draw the furry headband
Drawing step: Draw the furry headband

Now that you had some practice on the pom-pom, outline the headband with the same irregular zig-zags.

The furry zig-zag line is tracing the sketch. Notice again the rounded corners. The fur at the corners is bent down.

Step 5: Finish the Santa hat drawing with details and texture

Drawing step: Finish the Santa hat drawing with details and texture
Drawing step: Finish the Santa hat drawing with details and texture

Here are some final small details to improve the look of Santa’s hat.

Draw a few short lines to suggest the folds on the hat:

  • The “Y” one is at the end of the bottom edge of the folded tip.
  • A short line just underneath the folded tip.
  • The last line is a small wide-open “V” in the middle of the folded tip.

Then add some texture to the fur on the headband and pom-pom – there are just tiny “V”, “W”, or simply just straight lines.

Here is the result of our second way how to draw a Santa hat. The drawing is cleaned up with the sketch lines erased.

Drawing the folded hat was a bit trickier. But the result looks much better and more realistic than the simple drawing above. Do you agree?

The coloring is the same as for the simple version above. The hat itself is bright red. We left-out white highlights and added darker red shading. The white pom-pom and the furry headband are shaded with light blue.

Now all that is left is to draw the Santa Claus under your hat. When placing this hat on his head, you would just leave out the bottom of the hat – the lower half of the base oval.

Have fun and Merry Christmas!
